Who We Are
We are a team of experienced faculty members with experience teaching in research universities, graduate and undergraduate programs, and high school students, both in the US and overseas. Our goal in building Vellum is to prepare highly motivated students for a fast-changing college experience, in an era where initiative and skills will be rewarded over mere credentials. Vellum subject areas and student composition will reflect the reality of prestigious US college campuses.
The name is deliberate
Vellum is prepared animal skin, and for over a thousand years it was the material reserved for work meant to last: manuscripts, charters, and texts worth copying by hand at real cost because the knowledge inside them was worth preserving. Paper was cheaper and faster. Vellum was for what mattered.
Real knowledge transmission is rare on purpose
A professor who has spent a career on a subject, sitting with a small group of students who can keep pace, has never scaled cheaply. We treat that scarcity as the point, not a problem to design away with bigger classes or recorded lectures.
Quality is the constraint, not access
We would rather run fewer seminars, staffed by faculty we can vouch for personally, than expand the catalog with instructors we would not choose for our own children. A course that is not ready does not run.
Every design choice protects that scarcity
The application, the fifteen-student cap, the live format, and the option to continue one-on-one all serve the same purpose: keeping what makes a real seminar valuable from being diluted into a generic enrichment product.
