What is changing in undergraduate education — and what may matter for your students
A five-minute briefing for college counselors, educators, and parents. We select a small number of developments that appear consequential rather than trying to summarize everything happening in admissions.
1. MORE THAN HALF OF APPLICANTS REPORT SUBSTANTIAL HOME RESPONSIBILITIES
On September 3, Common App released the first full-cycle look at its required Responsibilities and Circumstances question.
More than 870,000 first-year applicants last year — about 57 percent of roughly 1.5 million applicants — reported at least one significant home-based responsibility or circumstance (caregiving, translation, paid work to help with family bills, and related items). About 458,000 students (30 percent) reported spending at least four hours a week caring for younger siblings or household members.
The question is required. It exists so students need not spend the personal essay explaining chores, caregiving, or housing instability, and so readers have context for grades and activity lists.
For counselors and families: An empty-looking activity list is not the same as an unengaged student. Make sure seniors actually complete the required question, and do not assume colleges will infer this context from an essay.

2. QUESTBRIDGE MATCH APPLICATIONS ARE DUE OCTOBER 1
The QuestBridge National College Match is open. The 2026 application deadline is Thursday, October 1, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Rankings are due October 15. Match Requirements for finalists are due November 1.
The Match is a free application path to partner colleges, with consideration for early admission and a four-year scholarship. It is not a general scholarship form, and eligibility rules (including citizenship/residency) are specific.
For counselors and families: High-achieving, low-income seniors who might be a fit should not wait for November early-decision calendars. October 1 is the gate.

3. CSS PROFILE OPENS OCTOBER 1 — IT IS NOT THE FAFSA
College Board’s CSS Profile for the 2027–28 aid year opens October 1. Hundreds of (mostly private) colleges use it to award their own grants. Many of those colleges require both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile; some also require a noncustodial-parent profile.
There is a fee ($25 first college, $16 each additional). Families with income at or below $100,000 typically qualify for an automatic full waiver. Deadlines are college-specific; Early Decision / Early Action often fall in early November.
For counselors and families: Check each college’s aid page now. Do not treat “we filed the FAFSA” as finished institutional-aid work.

4. UC APPLICATIONS MAY BE FILED OCTOBER 1–NOVEMBER 30
The University of California application for fall 2027 can be started as of August 1, but the filing period is October 1 through November 30 (11:59 p.m. Pacific Time). That window is shared across the undergraduate campuses. It is a hard deadline.
For counselors and families: Students applying to UC should treat October 1 as the first day they can submit, not the day they start Personal Insight Questions. Some campus TAG programs have September deadlines that close before UC filing opens.

5. CAL STATE APPLY: WORK NOW, SUBMIT OCTOBER 1–NOVEMBER 30
California State University first-year applications for fall 2027 run through Cal State Apply. Students may begin the application on August 1; submission opens October 1. The priority filing period runs through November 30. Campuses and impacted programs can close earlier or stay open later.
For counselors and families: UC and CSU are different applications, different essays, and different review. A student applying to both systems needs two complete files. Impacted majors generally must hit the priority window.
