California University Admissions Guide

Making sense of college choices, admissions and costs

First-year admission at UC's nine undergraduate campuses and ten selected California private colleges. This guide does not cover the California State University system or transfer admission. The private colleges are a selected comparison across national universities and liberal arts colleges, not an authoritative top-ten list.

Use the dated data to explore options, then verify the requirements for your entry year and exact program. Admissions statistics, deadlines, costs and testing policies can change.

78%
of California first-year applicants offered UC admission, fall 2026 [5]
102,031
Californians admitted to UC, a record [5]

01At a glance

California offers several distinct routes to a college degree: the University of California, the California State University system, community colleges and independent institutions. UC includes Berkeley and UCLA alongside seven other undergraduate campuses, while CSU adds a broad choice of universities across the state. Private options range from Stanford, USC and Caltech to liberal arts colleges such as Pomona and Claremont McKenna. Community colleges also provide a starting point for transfer to UC or CSU, making California’s landscape much wider than its most familiar university names.

  1. UC systemwide and campus selectivity differ. UC offered admission to 78% of California first-year applicants for fall 2026 and admitted 102,031 Californians [5]. Berkeley (10.5% overall) and UCLA (10.8%) are much more selective than the systemwide figure; admitted middle-50% UC GPAs are 4.16-4.28 and 4.20-4.30 [7]. Strong grades and demanding coursework remain important. Selective campuses also consider achievement in context, activities and the student's responses [8].
  2. Residency affects requirements and costs; admit rates need context. Nonresidents need a 3.4 minimum GPA versus 3.0 for Californians [10]. Estimated average on-campus total costs before aid for new undergraduates in 2027-28 are $90,100 and $49,078 respectively [20]. Domestic out-of-state group admit rates exceed California rates at seven of nine campuses in the fall 2026 UCOP tables [1, 2, computed]. The applicant pools differ, so these rates do not show what would happen to the same student under a different residency classification. Merced's computed figure needs particular caution because the numerator and denominator may not describe an identical pool.
  3. Describe your contribution in your own application. UC does not use SAT or ACT scores for admission [14]. It generally relies on the application rather than unsolicited recommendation letters; follow campus-specific requests, including Berkeley invitations [28]. Research can provide evidence relevant to special projects and other review factors [8]. Describe your contribution clearly in the activities section. A PIQ may add context if this is one of the stories that best represents you [9, 16].
  4. Optional research materials vary by college. Caltech welcomes optional research submissions with a recommendation and research description; include a citation if published [43, 86]. Harvey Mudd asks for an abstract or brief project description rather than an entire paper [48]. Follow the individual college's instructions.
  5. Testing policies differ and change by entry year. For fall 2027 entry, Stanford and Caltech require SAT or ACT scores [37, 41]; CMC is optional through fall 2027 and required from fall 2028 [49]. The other seven selected privates are test-optional for fall 2027 [46, 47, 53, 58, 60, 71, 82]. UC is test-blind [14]. Check the current policy before applying.
  6. International applicants should check both admission and enrollment requirements. International group admit rates are 5.4% at Berkeley and 8.1% at UCLA in the fall 2026 UCOP tables [1, 2, computed]. English proficiency, financial documentation and immigration requirements are separate from SAT/ACT policy. Check UC's international guidance and your college's international office [18, 19, 22].
How to read the numbers. Each figure links to a numbered source at the bottom of the page. Where a rate is marked "computed", we calculated it ourselves from official counts. UC fall 2026 figures are preliminary as of June 17, 2026 and can still move with waitlist activity [1]. Where we could not verify a number, we say so rather than estimate.

02UC campus admit rates, fall 2026

Toggle the residency pool. Residency rates are computed by dividing UCOP admit counts [1] by UCOP applicant counts [2]; overall rates are from UC's campus admit data pages [7]. Fall 2026 is preliminary. The overall series and residency series use different published snapshots and are not an exact partition of one shared denominator. Merced's campus-page overall rate is 94.7%; the UCOP totals imply 96.5%. Riverside and Santa Cruz also differ slightly.

These historical group rates are a guide to selectivity, not a prediction of your admission chances. Rates may differ by major, applicant background and year.

Selected campus

*Merced's computed California figure should be read cautiously because the numerator and denominator may not describe an identical pool. We have not established the reason for the difference. UC system (unduplicated): overall 74.6%, California 78.4%, out-of-state 64.1%, international 73.5% [1, 2, computed]. UC itself reports the California rate as 78% [5].

Domestic out-of-state applicants were admitted at higher rates than Californians at seven of nine campuses. The exceptions are Berkeley and Merced [1, 2, computed]. The applicant pools differ, so these group rates do not show what would happen to the same student under a different residency classification. Nonresidents need a 3.4 minimum GPA versus 3.0 for Californians [10].

03UC timeline for fall 2027 entry

This is a dated example for the 2026-27 application cycle, not a permanent annual calendar. Check UC's current dates for your intended entry year [15].

One UC application covers all nine campuses. UC has no early action or early decision [15, 31]. The fee is $80 per campus ($95 for international and non-immigrant applicants); fee waivers cover up to four campuses for eligible students [14, 29].

DateWhat happens

Applicants answer 4 of 8 Personal Insight Questions, up to 350 words each [9], and may list up to 20 activities and awards with a 350-character description each [14, 16]. UC is test-blind [14]. Minimum A-G GPA: 3.0 for California residents, 3.4 for nonresidents [10].

04Ten selective California privates

Early plans and testing policies shown for fall 2027 entry, checked October 2026. Admit-rate cohorts are dated separately in each row. Activate a column-heading button to sort; filter by name, testing policy or early plan. US News 2026 and 2027 ranks are supplementary and compare two separate categories.

ED (Early Decision) generally commits you to attend under the college's agreement if admitted; review affordability and aid terms first. EA (Early Action) is nonbinding; REA (Restrictive Early Action) limits other early applications. RD is Regular Decision. Each college's linked policy governs.

These historical group rates are a guide to selectivity, not a prediction of your admission chances. Rates may differ by major, applicant background and year.

Early plansUS News 2026 / 2027

Where counts are available, admit rates are computed from published counts. Early-round admit rates where published: Claremont McKenna ED 22.1% (216 of 978, fall 2025) [75], Harvey Mudd ED 18.4% (109 of 594, fall 2025) [76], Scripps ED 51.3% (141 of 275, fall 2025) [61]. Early-versus-overall rates reflect different applicant pools and do not establish that applying early causes an advantage. Caltech says REA and RD admit rates are both under 5% [41]. USC's fall 2026 early action admit rate was about 9.5% [83]. A not verified label means we could not yet confirm that detail from the college's own published information, so check with the college directly. Interviews: Pomona and Santa Clara not verified; LMU writing and interviews not verified.

05Testing has split

Stanford and Caltech now require the SAT or ACT [37, 41]; CMC is test-optional through fall 2027 entry and returns to test-required for fall 2028 [49]; seven other selected privates are test-optional for fall 2027 entry; UC is test-blind [14]. Test-optional means scores may be submitted; test-blind means SAT/ACT scores are not used for admission. English-proficiency requirements are separate [19].

06What makes a research experience meaningful

Research is one way to explore an interest. It is not a required component of UC's published first-year requirements [10], and Caltech explicitly states that it is optional [86]. Coursework, employment, caregiving, community work and independent projects can also help show your interests and contributions. UC generally relies on the application rather than unsolicited recommendation letters; follow campus-specific requests, including Berkeley invitations [28]. UC activity descriptions are limited to 350 characters [16]; some private colleges invite research materials directly [43, 48].

Signs of a meaningful experience

  • A real mentor relationship, where relevant. If you work with a mentor, be clear about your contribution. Independent work can also be meaningful. Caltech requires a recommendation with a research submission [43].
  • A question you care about. Explain what you wanted to understand, why it mattered and what you tried.
  • A clear account of your work and, where available, an output. Data, code, a prototype, paper or poster can help explain the work. Ongoing work and inconclusive findings can also be meaningful. For Caltech research submissions, include a research description and recommendation, plus a citation if published [43]. Harvey Mudd asks for an abstract or brief project description [48].
  • Depth and reflection. Describe iterations, setbacks, what you learned and the time you devoted to the work.
  • Connection to your interests. Research can provide evidence relevant to special projects and other review factors [8]. Interdisciplinary or exploratory work need not match an intended major.
  • Describing it for UC. Use a clear activities description, up to 350 characters [14, 16]. A PIQ may add context if it is one of your strongest stories. UC gives all eight prompts equal consideration; answer four, up to 350 words each [9]. You do not need to repeat research in both sections.

Things to be careful about

  • Describe where work was shared accurately. Distinguish a preprint, poster or student journal from other publication formats.
  • Explain your own contribution. Describe what you did, including limitations, without claiming someone else's work.
  • Keep titles and credentials accurate. Describe your mentor's role and title exactly as it is.
  • Follow each college's instructions. UC generally relies on the application rather than unsolicited letters. Follow any campus-specific request, including Berkeley invitations [28]; Harvey Mudd asks for an abstract or brief description, not a full paper [48].
  • Keep it in proportion. Research is not a required component of UC's published first-year requirements [10], and Caltech explicitly states that it is optional [86]. Coursework, employment, caregiving, community work and independent projects can also help show your interests and contributions.

Using this guide for your college choices

Start with academic fit, affordability and the requirements of the exact program, then use admissions data as context. Estimated costs are before financial aid, vary by campus and living arrangement, and are not your family's net price. Compare college net-price calculators and aid options [20, 21].

Early plans: Early Decision (ED) is generally binding if admitted under the college's agreement; understand the financial-aid and commitment terms before applying. Early Action (EA) is nonbinding; Restrictive Early Action (REA) adds limits on other early applications. Regular Decision (RD) is the standard later round. Read each college's linked policy.

  • Identify affordable options that fit your academic interests.
  • Verify the exact program's requirements, testing and English-proficiency rules.
  • Check current deadlines for your intended entry year on the college's own site.
  • Prepare authentic descriptions of existing work, responsibilities and contributions.
